Shelagh gets a health check and she’s really glad she did…

Shelagh talks about her experience of having an NHS Health Check with our Wellbeing team and its benefits.

Shelagh said: “Now that I’m 73, it struck me that I haven’t had a health check in years. I was looking for something more comprehensive than a blood pressure check.”

Shelagh saw that we offer free heath check sessions at her local library in Plympton so she thought she’d pop in and find out more.

After having a friendly chat with our expert health improvement practitioners about her lifestyle, they proceeded with a blood pressure check. Shelagh said: “My blood pressure reading was quite high, but I was really impressed that the team sent my results to my doctor so he can keep an eye on me.” [Results are only sent with the client’s consent].

“The ladies then checked my cholesterol, took all my measurements and did a diabetes risk assessment. My entire life I thought I was 5’6” but I’m actually only 5’4”! This meant that I was getting my BMI wrong when I calculated it myself at home. Even my bathroom scales were out, I thought I weighed 11 stone 7 but I’m actually only 11 stone 2.”

Our wellbeing team sat with Shelagh and talked through her health check results, Shelagh said: “They explained my results to me in words that I could actually understand. You can’t beat a one-to-one sit down with a practitioner. They gave me some really great, practical advice to help me improve my health. I cannot recommend getting a health check enough, its value is immeasurable. There must be so many people walking around thinking they are ok when they are not and by the time they do need help they’re in hospital. The ladies doing the health check were marvellous, they made me feel comfortable in every which way. I left feeling self-assured and confident! I’m so pleased I had the health check.”

Shelagh has proved that you don’t have to be feeling unwell to have a health check. We can work with you to lower your chances of developing health problems in the future.Shelagh said: “Now that I’m 73, it struck me that I haven’t had a health check in years.
