Vaping to Quit

Vaping is a lot less harmful than smoking, and a lot cheaper! Switching to vaping makes quitting easier and can still be social.

Public Health England recently released a video illustrating the health harms of smoking cigarettes compared to vaping.

The video was produced to show people that vaping can be considered as an option to break the habit of smoking cigarettes, despite the mixed messages shared by studies and media headlines around their usage.

The misconception that vaping is as harmful as smoking could be preventing thousands of smokers from switching to e-cigarettes to help them quit.  While vaping is not risk-free, research from Public Health England estimates that it is 95% safer than smoking.

A lot of people think nicotine is one of the most harmful substances in cigarettes. In fact, although it is addictive, nicotine is relatively harmless. Vaping allows you to inhale nicotine in a vapour rather than smoke. They work by heating a liquid that contains nicotine, rather than burning tobacco so they don’t produce tar or carbon monoxide, two of the most damaging parts of tobacco smoke.

Around 2.5 million adults are using e-cigarettes in England, and they have helped many thousands of people successfully quit.

Using an e-cigarette can help you manage your nicotine cravings. To get the best out of it, make sure you’re using it as much as you need to and with the right strength of nicotine.

Our expert health improvement practitioners can give you advice about the right device and nicotine strength for you, how to use a vape, plus extra support to help you succeed.

A major UK clinical trial published in 2019 found that, when combined with expert face-to-face support, people who used e-cigarettes to quit smoking were twice as likely to succeed as people who used other nicotine replacement products, such as patches or gum.

“It’s safe to say that vaping is much cheaper than smoking! Vaping is so much safer than smoking tobacco, it’s worth giving it a try.” Paul.

“It gave me confidence knowing the vape was there in case of cravings. When I was smoking I used to smoke in the car when stuck in traffic and when watching the tv in the evening, the cravings are worst at those moments. Vaping really helped me deal with the cravings.” Jess.

Vaping devices and e-liquids

There are a variety of vapes to choose from, these include:

  • Disposable vape bars  (usually disposable but sometimes rechargeable and refillable with e-liquid capsules)

  • compact pod devices shaped like a flash drive or pebble (either disposable, or rechargeable and refillable with e-liquid capsules)

  • vape pens with a tank you fill with your choice of e-liquid, and a replaceable coil and rechargeable battery

  • “cigalikes” designed to look like a cigarette (either disposable, or rechargeable and refillable with e-liquid capsules)

  • customisable devices with variable power (these are more difficult to use and need more maintenance)

Which vape is best to quit smoking?

A vape bar, pod device or vape pen are good choices, as they are discreet, make small clouds and can give high amounts of nicotine.

It’s important to choose an e-liquid with the right strength of nicotine to satisfy your individual needs. You need to start at a nicotine level that matches your cigarette use – how frequently and how much you smoke. A specialist vape shop or our expert health improvement practitioners can help you make the right choice.

Whichever vape you choose, make sure you use it regularly.

Tips to Help you Quit Smoking by switching to vaping

Choose the kit that's right for you

A rechargeable e-cigarette with a refillable tank delivers nicotine more effectively and quickly than a disposable model and is likely to give you a better chance of quitting smoking.

Your local vape shop or our expert health improvement practitioners can give you advice about the right device and nicotine strength for you.

You can use your vape as often as you need

Usually when you first quit smoking, you vape a lot, pretty much at any thought of smoking, which is good.

Use your vape as often as you like.

Whenever you are feeling cravings you can use your vape to help them subside.

Combine Nicotine Patches and Vaping

You can use patches with a vape if you need to, as these give ongoing support by releasing nicotine slowly.

You can top up with your vape to deal with immediate cravings.
